Artist's Statement:
A Carry-On: something small and light, but probably interesting and important, which can be taken onto an aircraft by pilot or passenger. These studies consider some of the little-viewed aspects of flight. The interior and exterior surfaces of wing fabrics are presented, with their attendant weathered and stressed patterns emerging like landscapes and microcosms. And the automatic control of flight machines is more than cold electronics when the details of structure are examined closely, and abstracted under an artist's hand.

About the Flight Centennial Collection:
The various "Carry-On Studies", as in all works in the Flight Centennial Collection, use structural components, flight-stressed fabrics and metals, and contemporary and vintage hardware, from aircraft that played major roles in the first century of aviation. Framing for all "Carry-On Studies" is of standard art materials.
