Artist's Statement:
"First Down the Runway" was inspired by a black and white checkerboard painted on the massive engine cowl of an F4U Corsair, and by tail insignia for 8th Air Force bombers.

On a distant airstrip a weary pilot brings a huge radial engine to a lumbering, bubbling idle... smoke, sweat, fuel and paint. A cursory checklist: magnetos, prop, what drain valves!? Wait... heat. Now consider his departure first down the runway: Throttle, wheels, an engine's cantata... and a blur of checkerboard.
